CommutaCar Motor Alert
As we have gotten a few old CommutaCar motors in over the years and
a trend has developed.
There is no front bearing in the CommutaCar motor! There is only a
rubber seal. The motor relies on the differential to support that end of the motor. As the
miles increase, vibration cause the bolts that hold the motor to the differential (and
keep them aligned) work loose. That in turn allows the armature to rub on the lower stator
core causing both heat and noise . . . yeah, the destruction of the motor.
The Fix:
With the batteries disconnected, remove the four bolts on the
differential end of the motor. Separate the motor from its' front housing (careful to keep
the armature in the heavy black part with all the electrical connections). You won't have
to mess with the brushes that way. Inside the motor end that is still attached to the
differential are four additional bolts holding it to the differential, SNUG 'EM up. You
may want to put a little "Lock Tight"* on the bolts while you are at it.
Reassemble, the noise/heat are gone and the performance has returned. Dollars to donuts
there is also an oil leak there too. It has been caused by the misaligned shaft wearing on
the rubber seal - order a new one from Nu-Kar
Electric Vehicles.
* that is problably somebody's registered trade mark (Lord Adhesives?).
